Why we made it

I tried to nurse my son in an open-front abaya at the masjid one Ramadan and ended up cross-legged behind a pillar, half a flap short of dignity.

That night, my sister and I started sketching. Concealed zip-to-waist. Closed silhouette outside, full nursing access inside. We tested it with our own babies before we tested it with a pattern.

A closed abaya with a concealed zip-to-waist. No flap, no panel, no cape. We made this because we couldn't find a single nursing-friendly abaya in North America that didn't either ship from the Gulf in three weeks or look like a maternity dress with a slit.

The zip sits flush against the front seam under a panel of the same fabric — from the outside the silhouette reads as a clean closed abaya. From the inside, it opens to the waist for full nursing access. We tested it with our own babies before we tested it with a pattern.

Two deep pockets, the same considered chiffon as the Pocket Abaya, in petite / regular / tall. For the sister doing pickup with a baby on her hip and a long Friday ahead.
